According to an official, the tragedy happened at around 7 o’clock while the superfast express train was en route from Howrah’s Shalimar station to Tamil Nadu’s Chennai Central station.

The superfast express and cargo train collided, according to the railway account of the tragedy, but a derailment took place first.
