Biden welcomes Modi to the White House with a 21-gun salute

21 gun salute PM Modi White House

US President Joe Biden gave Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ceremonial greeting on the South Lawn of the White House on Thursday during his first state visit to the US, which included a 21-gun salute.

Thursday’s high-level talks will be followed by a private meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden in the Oval Office of the White House to further advance the expanding Indo-US strategic ties in fields including defence, space, and key technology.

Following the welcome ceremony, the leaders of the two biggest democracies in the world will meet bilaterally in the Oval Office, where they are scheduled to give an introductory statement. Vice President Kamala Harris and the Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff will be present.

A joint news conference with Modi and Biden is set to take place in the East Room of the White House.

Nearly 8,000 people of the diaspora and the Indian American community received invitations to the ceremonial welcome, which was a historic event.

The diaspora’s enthusiasm was unaffected by the weather as they raised slogans and waved the flags of the two nations, many of whom had travelled overnight from other parts of the US.
