Cincinnati Open: Medvedev & Tsitsipas advance to semifinals

Daniil Medvedev, the top seed in the world, and Stefanos Tsitsipas, the fourth seed, eliminated American challengers Taylor Fritz and John Isner on Friday to advance to the Cincinnati Open semifinals.

The 2019 Cincinnati winner Medvedev improved his game for his next US Open title defense by defeating 11th seeded Fritz 7-6(1), 6-3, while Tsitsipas could only muster one break opportunity in a three set battle with Isner, but it was enough to secure a 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3 victory.

A misfiring Fritz, one of the game’s top hitters, had just three aces to go along with three double-faults, which helped Medvedev to victory.

Isner, the most prolific server in men’s tennis, had 18 aces as well, about 200 more than his next rival Nick Kyrgios, but it was still not enough to beat the persistent Greek opponent.

While Medvedev’s victory appeared straightforward, it was far but easy for him; he had to hold off three set points in the first game before winning 7-1 in the tie-break.
