Today, officials in the southeast and adjacent portions of central Bay of Bengal reported that Cyclone Mocha had strengthened into a “very severe” cyclonic storm.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), which is keeping a close eye on the cyclone, reported on May 12 that “The SCS “Mocha” intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm, lay centred at 05:30 hours IST of 12th May 2023 over central adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal near latitude 13.2N and long 88.1E, about 520 km west-northwest of Port Blair.”
IMD had earlier forecast that Cyclone Mocha will strengthen into a strong cyclone by Thursday night.
Warnings about the potential for cyclone ‘Mocha’ to develop into a severe storm prompted the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to send eight teams and 200 rescuers to Digha in West Bengal. “We’ve deployed 8 teams. 200 rescuers of NDRF deployed on the ground and 100 rescuers on standby,” said Singh, speaking to ANI.
Senior scientist at the Indian Meteorological Department in Bhubaneswar, Sanjeev Dwivedi, shared an update in which he forecast that the cyclone will recurve gently and build into a very severe cyclone over the central Bay of Bengal on the evening of May 12.
