With a 7-5 6-2 victory in the Wimbledon fourth round on Sunday, unseeded Czech Marie Bouzkova ended Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia’s eight-match winning streak on grass and advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
The 23-year-old Bouzkova has improved significantly at the grasscourt Grand Slam since eliminating seventh-seeded American Danielle Collins in the first round. Before that, she had never advanced past the second round.
The 66th-ranked Czech had defeated Garcia in her lone prior encounter on grass. Garcia was thought to have a chance to win Wimbledon this year given her title run at Bad Homburg and the women’s draw’s wide openness.
The highest seed left in the women’s draw, Ons Jabeur, or the 24th seed Elise Mertens will be Bouzkova’s next opponent. “If you would have told me before the tournament started that I would be in the quarterfinals, I definitely wouldn’t believe you,” Bouzkova said.
“Take things match by match whenever possible. It has been an extremely difficult trip for me from my first match. For me, just being in the quarters right now is quite wonderful.” I’m really so proud of myself for being able to manage everything so well and just take it all in.”
