Deepak Punia (86 kg) was methodical in his fights and won first place without dropping a single point.
The wrestler from Chhara village won his first match with a technical victory over Matthew Clay Oxenham of New Zealand and then defeated Alexander Moore of Canada 3-1 to get to the gold-medal match against Muhammad Inam of Pakistan.
The 23-year-old Indian outlasted Inam 3-0 because of his greater endurance. His first point dealt with a push out, while his second dealt with the Pakistani’s complacency.
Since Inam was outmatched by the second round, there were no notable movements made during the fight. Deepak added another push out point to seal the victory.
