Djokovic defeats Van Rijthoven, will face Sinner in next round

In a tough 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory on Sunday, first seed Novak Djokovic upped his game to terminate Dutch wildcard Tim van Rijthoven’s incredible run and continue his Wimbledon championship defence.

Since retiring due to an elbow injury against Tomas Berdych in the 2017 quarterfinals, Djokovic is now undefeated on the well-kept lawns of the All England Club. He is vying for his fourth consecutive Wimbledon victory and his seventh overall at the grasscourt major.

For a spot in Friday’s semi-finals, Djokovic will face Italian Jannik Sinner, the 10th seed, after the 20-year-old defeated fifth-seeded Carlos Alcaraz in the previous match on Centre Court.

Van Rijthoven won the ATP 250 grasscourt tournament in’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, by defeating world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-1. At the time, he was ranked 205th in the world and had yet to claim a Challenger Tour victory.
