Elise Mertens ousts Pegula to reach 4th round of French Open

Elise Mertens defeats Pegula

The world number three Jessica Pegula’s dreams of winning her first Grand Slam championship were dashed on Friday after she was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Belgian Elise Mertens in the third round of the French Open.

Pegula, 29, was unable to counter Mertens’ adaptable style of play. In order to manoeuvre her opponent and pin her back, Mertens, a former world number one in doubles, employed every shot in her arsenal, including sliced forehands, drop shots, lobs, and deep groundstrokes.

28th-ranked Mertens, who broke the American twice in a row to jump out to a quick 5-0 lead and win the first set in just 26 minutes, started off nearly faultless.

Pegula broke Mertens early in the second set, but the Belgian retaliated in the following game. Pegula had advanced to the third round after her sick Italian opponent Camila Giorgi retired after the first set.

At 3-2, Pegula had another opportunity to take a break but missed three backhands in a row.
