The World Championships’ women’s discus final was stunned by China’s Feng Bin on Wednesday, with American Valerie Allman, the Olympic winner, settling for bronze.
Feng won after her season-high and personal best first attempt of 69.12 metres, while Sandra Perkovic of Croatia took silver with a second effort of 68.45 metres.
Allman launched the discus across the field on her third throw while the home crowd cheered her on. She jumped for joy, but the throw fell far short of Feng’s effort, and she mishandled her final attempt for 51.41.
Yaime Perez, the defending champion from Cuba, struggled to find her strength, finishing sixth with a best throw of 63.07.
