Frenchwoman Clara Burel defeated Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday at Flushing Meadows, adding her name to the expanding list of giant-killing qualifiers at the US Open this year.

The 131st-ranked Burel put on a comfortable performance to defeat Rybakina, after Ukrainian Daria Snigur’s victory over two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep and Colombian Daniel Galan’s victory over fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

With 19 unforced errors in the first set, Rybakina of Kazakhstan wasted six of her seven break points.

Burel, a former top junior player, took advantage of her chances to break in games five and nine.

On day two of the hardcourt major, in hot and muggy circumstances, Burel defeated Rybakina, who is of Russian descent, breaking her in the first game of the second set. She also won more than three-quarters of her first-serve points.

She raised her fists in the air after a backhand winner gave her the victory.
