Goa Forward Party ready to combat BJP in upcoming Assembly session

Panaji, June 20 (IANS) Expecting the BJP government with its brute majority in Goa to try to bulldoze the opposition during the forthcoming Assembly session, Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai said on Thursday that in a democracy, people are always in the majority.

“In a democracy, the people are always in the majority. A brute majority in the Assembly means nothing. I will force the government to focus on issues pertaining to the state,” Sardesai said after meeting people from various constituencies to discuss different issues.

In the 40-member Goa Assembly, BJP has 28 MLAs besides having the support of five other legislators.

“Many people came to meet me and discussed their issues. They are all victims of the brute majority of the BJP. I will raise their issues in the Assembly and try to draw the attention of the government to address them,” Sardesai said.

“As a regional political force, we are committed to raising issues that directly concern Goa, and this time too, we will hold the government accountable to the people of Goa. I have personally heard the grievances of people from across the state, and I will raise them in the House,” he added.

Odisha Assembly session: Oppn stages walkout during Governor's address

Bhubaneswar, July 22 (IANS) The Budget Session of the Odisha Assembly commenced on a stormy note on Monday as the opposition staged a walkout soon after Governor Raghubar Das began his address.

The opposition parties walked out of the House in protest against the state government’s inaction in connection with a case related to the alleged assault on an Assistant Section Officer (ASO) by the Governor’s son, Lalit Kumar, in Puri on July 7.

“My party and I are disappointed and surprised to find that the present government has taken no action on the Governor’s son who had unleashed violence on a government officer. We are deeply shocked by this. Law and Order seems to have broken down in our state,” said Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik.

“When I was in government, immediate action was taken against Ministers, MLAs, MPs, senior government servants, if they had broken the law. The state government must act according to the law. Because of this, my party marched out of the Assembly hall at the beginning of the session,” added Patnaik.

Senior Congress leader Tara Prasad Bahinipati said the party had urged Chief Minister Mohan Majhi to take action against the Governor’s son. The Congress had earlier announced that the party would not allow the Governor to speak in the House, hence they walked out.

Notably, the opposition Congress and Biju Janata Dal have been demanding action against Das’s son for allegedly assaulting ASO Baikuntha Pradhan, who was in charge of Raj Bhawan. Puri during the visit of President Droupadi Murmu on the occasion of Rath Yatra. Pradhan accused Kumar and his personal security Officer of assaulting him over a petty issue on late July 7 evening.

No special status to Bihar, reiterates Centre in Lok Sabha; RJD takes 'toy' jibe

No special status to Bihar, reiterates Centre in Lok Sabha; RJD takes 'toy' jibe

New Delhi, July 22 (IANS) The Centre on Monday ruled out special status to Bihar, a long-standing demand by the state-based parties including BJP’s key ally JD (U). The rejection of special status resulted in pointed jibes from Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) which also demanded the resignation of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The Centre’s response came on a question put by JD (U) MP Ramprit Mandal in Lok Sabha. The JD (U) had asked the Finance Ministry whether the government proposes to provide special status to Bihar and other most backward states to promote economic growth and industrialisation.

Replying to the question, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary stated, “The Special Category Status for plan assistance was granted in the past by the National Development Council (NDC) to some States that were characterised by a number of features necessitating special consideration.

The Minister further stated, “Earlier, the request of Bihar for Special Category Status was considered by an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) which submitted its Report on 30th March 2012. The IMG came to the finding that based on existing NDC criteria, the case for Special Category Status for Bihar is not made out.”

The rejection of special status demand for Bihar, despite Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) in alliance with the BJP in the state as well as the Centre, prompted Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) to hit out at the ruling party in Bihar.

The RJD in a post on X, mocked the BJP-JD(U) alliance and said that Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar have given the Bihar ‘special state’ toy.

It further said that Nitish Kumar bowed down to the BJP and lowered demand from special state to special package but that was also refused.

The party also demanded that Bihar CM Nitish Kumar tender his resignation for failing to get special category status.

RJD leader Manoj Jha said that Bihar needed both — special category status as well as special package and doing away with any one thing will be ‘injustice’ to the state.

He also justified the special status demand for Bihar by claiming that it was the first state to raise demand and states like Odisha and Andhra Pradesh only followed suit.

Notably, the Special category status for any state entails extended support from the Centre in terms of funding and other forms of monetary support.

Ladki Bahin Yojana: July-August dole to be given jointly for rakhi, says Ajit Pawar

Parner (Maharashtra), July 22 (IANS) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who on Monday launched a statewide tour to reach out to women in the run up to the Assembly elections, announced that those eligible under the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana will get dole of Rs 3,000 (Rs 1,500 per month) for July and August together due to Rakshabandhan on August 19.

The money will be deposited directly in their bank accounts through DBT, said Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) National President Ajit Pawar.

He chose to launch his statewide tour from Parner where the NCP(SP) nominee Nilesh Lanke was elected to the Lok Sabha, defeating the BJP candidate Sujay Vikhe-Patil.

Ajit Pawar asked the women to elect the Mahayuti government so that the welfare schemes announced in the budget would continue to be implemented.

Ajit Pawar said that their vote to re-elect the Mahayuti government was crucial and claimed that if the Opposition came to power they might discontinue the schemes.

He criticised the Opposition for terming these schemes as “chunavi jumla” saying that they should have welcomed them.

Ajit Pawar, who celebrated his birthday by cutting a cake and seeking his mother’s blessings, later at the interactive session with women claimed that the government was firm on its commitment to provide financial assistance not just under the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana but also through the Mukhyamantri Annapurna Yojana (giving three cylinders free annually) and providing free higher education to girls.

“Ha Ajitdadacha Wada ahe (This is Ajitdada’s promise),” he said.

“The government will deposit Rs 1,500 per month through DBT in the accounts of eligible beneficiaries. The government will pay for July and August together. Those who have not filled the forms, I would like to say that even if you fill them in the month of August you are eligible for this scheme, you will be paid from July onwards. So don’t worry. The scheme is meant to help poor women with an annual family income of Rs 2.50 lakh,” said Pawar.

Ajit Pawar also held similar interactive sessions at Ahilyanagar, Shrigonda and Karjat Jamkhed.

Meanwhile, women, who attended the interactive sessions, felicitated Ajit Pawar for the announcement of welfare schemes and also tied raakhis and celebrated his birthday.
