With a brilliant display on Centre Court on Monday, former champion Simona Halep defeated fourth-seeded Spaniard Paula Badosa 6-1, 6-2 and advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
The 16th-seeded Romanian, who defeated Serena Williams in the 2019 final, performed once more for the spectators on Monday while competing on the grasscourt Grand Slam’s main showcourt for the first time since that victory.
To complete the triumph in an hour, she pounded 17 winners, monitored her unforced errors, and broke Badosa’s serve five times.
“I desired to be there at this time. I believe I had a tremendous game “said Halep. “She’s a tremendous player; it’s always difficult to play against her.”
Always anxious before, but I really appreciated being back on Centre Court in front of this lovely crowd who have always been my supporters.
To be back here is a delight.” As the lone past champion still in the draw and with none of the top 15 women’s seeds still in the competition, Halep has been operating under the radar at the 2022 Championships but is now viewed as a serious title candidate.
