After dominating Poland’s Magdalena Frech 6-4, 6-1, former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep advanced to the fourth round of the Championships.

The 30-year-old Romanian entered the match having defeated Frech in both of their prior matches. This was the first year the player has returned to the All England Club after winning the grasscourt major in 2019.

Despite a strong breeze blowing across Court 2, Halep got out to a fast start to establish a 4-0 lead. Although the 92nd-ranked Frech was able to recover a break of serve, it was unable to prevent her opponent from taking the opening set.

Frech, who was competing in her first third-round encounter at a major, restored the break at the beginning of the second set, but Halep quickly took the lead again and celebrated with a clinched fist and many slaps on her thigh.

After that, the 2018 French Open champion was unstoppable as she continued to saturate the court with winners and sprinted to the net whenever she could, leaving Frech—who has never defeated a top-20 player—stranded.

With her 24th winner, Halep broke Frech’s serve twice more and ended the match in 67 minutes.

Halep stated on the court, “It has been a good match. “The difficulty of playing on grass is constant. With the wind today, it was difficult.”

“Playing at Wimbledon is always a pleasure, and I have wonderful memories there, so I’m trying to just enjoy every day.”

“I have confidence that I can win this tournament, but every match is challenging, and every opponent is tough.”
