Kanpur, June 16 (IANS) The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) and National Sugar Institute (NSI), Kanpur, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for biofuels.

The signing of the MoU took place in the presence of Ashwini Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Sugar), Department of Food and Public Distribution, Union Government; Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur; and Seema Paroha, Director, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur.

Under this MoU, IIT Kanpur and NSI Kanpur will engage in joint projects to conduct cutting-edge research and develop and adopt state-of-the-art technology to enhance biofuel production in the country with improved efficiency and sustainability.

The biofuels are expected to play a key role in reducing dependency on fossil fuels and mitigating climate change as well.

Uttar Pradesh being an agriculture-based state and one of the top-ranked states in sugarcane production, will be an ideal place for biofuel research.

This partnership aims to leverage the expertise of both institutions to address the growing energy needs of India while promoting environmental conservation.

Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, said, “NSI Kanpur has been working in this field for over 60 years, understanding the market dynamics and technological requirements well. Parallelly, IIT Kanpur possesses an understanding of fundamental science and technologies in chemical and other related domains. The aim is to combine the strengths of both institutions to create a state-of-the-art centre to help India take a leadership position in the area of biofuels.”

Aswani Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Sugar), Union government, said: “The National Bio-fuel Policy, 2018, allows the production of ethanol from various sugarcane-based feedstock as well as the use of surplus food grains for production of ethanol. Under the Ethanol Blended with Petrol (EBP) Programme, the government has fixed the target of 20 per cent blending of ethanol with petrol by 2025. To increase the production of ethanol in the country, the government has been promoting maize as a major feedstock for the production of ethanol. It is also focusing towards the ‘Waste to Wealth’ approach by promoting the usage of other by-products of sugarcane.”

JD(U) MLA raises questions over bridge collapse incidents in Bihar

New Delhi, July 22 (IANS) Dr Sanjeev Kumar, the JD(U) MLA from Parbatta, Bihar, has raised concerns with the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar government regarding the collapse of the Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge.

Sanjeev Kumar commented on the Aguwani bridge being constructed in Sultanganj, saying that it has been under construction for the last ten years.

“It was intended to be finished in four years, but it has taken ten years to complete, and it has collapsed twice during construction, yet no action has been taken against any officials. There is a flaw somewhere in the system”, said the JD(U) MLA.

“It falls within my constituency. Once completed, many people will benefit from it”, he added.

Sanjeev Kumar mentioned that CM Nitish Kumar is vigilant regarding law and order, however, there has been a decline, and improvement is necessary.

There have been close to a dozen bridge collapses in Bihar in this monsoon season, some of which took place in Araria, Madhubani, East Champaran, and Kishanganj.

Confident that Union Budget will make India a leading economy: K’taka BJP chief

Bengaluru, July 22 (IANS) Karnataka BJP president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra stated on Monday that he was confident about Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presenting a budget that will make India one of the leading economies in the world.

Speaking to the media persons here, he said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present her 7th budget tomorrow. There are many expectations and challenges. I have confidence that she would present a budget which would make India one of the leading nations in the world,” he added.

He expressed hope that the budget would support youth, farmers, and the middle class, and also mentioned that significant contributions to the state were expected.

Talking about rain havoc in the state, Vijayendra urged the state Congress government to respond generously, similar to how the previous BJP government did, by providing more relief to flood victims and those who lost their homes.

“In places like Uluvare and Shirur in Ankola taluk, the poor have lost their homes due to rain-related disasters. I have observed the situation during the visit. Under the leadership of former CM B.S. Yediyurappa, the previous BJP state government had provided Rs 5 lakh to the poor who lost their homes, which was in addition to Rs 1 lakh compensation mandated by the NDMA rules,” he said.

“For houses with collapsed walls, the NDMA rules mandate a compensation of Rs 40,000, but Yediyurappa increased this amount to Rs 1 lakh. Throughout the state, the poor are losing their homes due to heavy rain,” Vijayendra said adding that the Chief Minister should provide similar relief and respond to this problem immediately.

Vijayendra also criticized the lack of visits by legislators and ministers to the families affected by the Shirur landslide. “Compensation should have been provided to the affected families,” he said.

Centre fuelling rapid infra growth but states need to pitch in too: Eco Survey

New Delhi, July 22 (IANS) The Economic Survey released on Monday states that buoyant investment by the Centre has played a pivotal role in funding large-scale infrastructure projects in recent years in highways, seaports, railways and airports but the state governments and private sector need to pitch in to accelerate development.

It highlights that National Highways construction increased by three times from 11.7 km per day in FY14 to 34 km per day by FY24 while capital expenditure on Railways has increased by 77 per cent in the past five years, with significant investments in the construction of new lines, gauge conversion and doubling.

Similarly, in FY24, new terminal buildings at 21 airports have been operationalised, which has led to an overall increase in passenger handling capacity by approximately 62 million passengers per annum.

Besides, India’s rank in the International Shipments category in the World Bank Logistics Performance Index has improved to 22nd in 2023 from 44th in 2014.

“Given that infrastructure-creation efforts in India are currently predominantly public sector-led, a higher level of private sector financing and resource mobilisation from new sources will be crucial for India to continue down the path of building quality infrastructure. Facilitating this would not only require policy and institutional support from the Central government, but state and local governments would have to play an equally important role,” the Survey states.

It also states that 945 km of metro rail or regional rapid transit (RRTS) railway lines are operational, and 939 km are under construction in 27 cities while 86 km of metro rail/RRTS lines are operationalised in FY24.

Similarly, the Survey highlights that the clean energy sector in India saw a new investment of Rs 8.5 lakh crore (USD 102.4 billion) between 2014 and 2023. The UJALA Scheme resulted in an estimated energy savings of 48.42 billion kWh per year, GHG emission reduction of 39.30 million tonne CO2 per year, and annual monetary savings of Rs 19,335 crore in consumer electricity bills, it adds.

While BJP legislators staged a protest in the Well of the House, Ashoka stated that the BJP MLAs were protesting regarding the alleged scam in the tribal welfare Board.

“The money belongs to the government and Dalits. The funds need to be brought back to the state treasury, and the guilty need to be punished,” he said.

“The House has debated the issue for three days, and it needs to be taken to a logical end. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah spoke about everything except the scam when he made his statement in the House. The CM reserved his speech to target the BJP,” Ashoka claimed.

The government has published CM Siddaramaiah’s response as an advertisement in the media, this is not good and is an insult to the House, Ashoka said.
