IIT Madras to develop India’s first indigenous smart 155 ammunition

Chennai, Feb 5 (IANS) The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has partnered with Munitions India Limited, a defense public sector company, to develop the country’s first indigenously designed smart 155 ammunition .

The aim is to increase the accuracy of the 155 mm shell within a circular error probable (CEP) of 10 meters. Presently, the munitions developed in India have a CEP of 500m. Another key objective is to increase lethality at the point of terminal impact, IIT-M said in a statement issued here on Monday.

Munitions India is the country’s largest manufacturer of ammunition and explosives for the armed and paramilitary forces.

Prof. G. Rajesh, Faculty, Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras, and his team of researchers will develop the smart munition, which has a duration of two years.

Explaining the key aspects of this project, Ravi Kant, Chairman and Managing Director, Munitions India, said that this will be a big step forward for the country to achieve its goal of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.

Prof. G. Rajesh said, “The special purpose casing will house the guidance, navigation and control system along with roller isolation strategies, canard actuation system, fuze, casing body and warhead. The projectile smart will have complex technologies like miniaturized electronics/sensors and mechanical structures.The proposed smart missile will use the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) as a guide.This means independence from satellite systems bed of foreign governments”.

Key features and components of the Indian 155mm Smart Ammunition will include:

Smart ammunition to be fired from 39 and 45 -155 mm caliber artillery guns without any change in the gun system

It is a guided, canard-controlled, fin-stabilized shell

The maximum range is 38 km – The minimum range is 8 km

3-mode fuse operation: point detonation, height of explosion, delayed detonation

Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) Guided GPS Backup. (NAVIC is the primary guidance system that will make guided munitions completely independent of the involvement of any foreign agency)
