In numerous districts of south Bengal, which had been experiencing heat wave-like conditions for more than a month, the southwest monsoon began to arrive on Monday, according to the IMD.

According to a spokeswoman for the Indian Meteorological Department, conditions are now conducive for the system to move farther south over the state in the next two to three days, when it is expected to produce moderate to heavy rainfall in various locations.

On Monday morning, the city’s inhabitants, who had been suffering from the heat, were met by overcast skies and a gentle drizzle, much to their delight.

“Today the southwest monsoon advanced into some parts of North and South 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Nadia, Hooghly, Murshidabad, Birbhum and Purba Bardhaman districts… Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon in more parts of south Bengal during the next two-three days,” the spokesperson said.
