IPL 2024: My father and Yuvraj will be happy with my bowling performance, says SRH's Abhishek Sharma

New Delhi, May 25 (IANS) Abhishek Sharma’s surprise left-arm spin did wonders for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as they overpowered Rajasthan Royals by 36 runs in Qualifier 2 to set up a clash in the final against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Abhishek picked wickets of Rajasthan captain Sanju Samson (10) and Shimron Hetmyer (4) to give big jolts to the side while chasing 176. He returned with figures of 2-24 in four overs in the match. The 23-year-old said his father and former legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh would be happy to see his bowling performance.

“My father will be very happy, he was a left-arm spinner. He has been working really hard on my bowling. Somehow, I knew that if I kept on working on my bowling I could contribute to my team because I have that in myself,” Abhishek said in a video posted on IPL’s official website.

Abhishek explained he had to convince SRH coaches and captain Pat Cummins to allow him to bowl. Before the clash against Rajasthan, Abhishek had only bowled three overs in the season.

“From the junior cricket, I have been bowling a lot. I was waiting for this opportunity. It was not easy, I had to convince my captain and coach because they had not seen me bowling much.”

“Whenever I had talks with Yuvi Paaji about my bowling, he used to say that I can be a better bowler than him, so that thing I had in my mind and he will be really happy with my performance,” he said.

Ahead of the final, Abhishek wants the fans to turn up in large numbers and support Hyderabad at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

“I’ve been playing IPL for quite a few years now and obviously as a youngster my dream was to play in the finals and finally we’re playing this year. I know Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have a lot of fan following here. I would request all the CSK fans to come and support us in the final,” he said.

Abhishek was not the only left-arm spinner that had an imprint on Friday as Shehbaz Ahmed also scalped three wickets to pick Player of the Match accolade.

“Since the start of the campaign, we’re very relaxed and we’re still not very excited. Our main focus is to win the final. I’m happy and proud of my semi-final performance,” said Ahmed. “When I was batting in the death overs, I felt the wicket was slow and the ball was coming slowly on the bat. In my first over of bowling, after getting Yashasvi Jaiswal’s wicket, I was confident that left-arm spin would be tough for the right-handed batters,” he added.

The final of the tournament will be played on Sunday.

Women’s Asia Cup: India's Smriti Mandhana gifts phone to young cricket fan in wheelchair

Dambulla, July 20 (IANS) Following India’s seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in their first match of the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana displayed a brilliant gesture towards a young cricket fan in a wheelchair. In the video shared by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on its ‘X’ handle, Smriti presented a mobile phone to a young fan named Adeesha Herath and clicked a picture with the young girl, who was accompanied by her mother.

“Adeesha Herath’s love for cricket brought her to the stadium, despite all the challenges. The highlight of her day? A surprise encounter with her favorite cricketer, Smriti Mandhana, who handed her a mobile phone as a token of appreciation. 𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐦e,” captioned the SLC.

Smriti even talked to Adeesha for some time and did a high-five with her at the end of the brief chat. “We came to watch the match unexpectedly as my daughter wanted to go for the match. We met Mandhana madam from the India team and my daughter received a phone from her.”

Coming to Friday’s match, bowlers shone in a top-notch performance, led by Deepti Sharma’s 3-20, to bowl out Pakistan for 108 and set the base for India’s seven-wicket victory over Pakistan.

Smriti and Shafali Verma shared an 85-run opening partnership off just 57 balls to help India chase down the total with 35 balls to spare. India, the defending champions, will next face Nepal in their second Group A game of the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle sign Serbian teenage defender Miodrag Pivas

Newcastle, July 20 (IANS) English football club Newcastle United have signed Serbian defender Miodrag Pivas from FK Jedinstvo Ub on Saturday ahead of the upcoming Premier League season. The 19-year-old, who has represented Serbia at under-17 level, also featured in a defensive midfield position last season as Jedinstvo finished as runners-up in the second tier to clinch promotion to the Serbian Super Liga.

Born in Novi Sad, north-west of Serbian capital Belgrade, Pivas began his career with Austrian regional sides UFC Siezenheim and SV Grodig before returning to his native country with Jedinstvo in 2023.

“It’s absolutely unbelievable to join such a big club like Newcastle United and I cannot wait to get started. I see the project of the club and it looks great which helped convince me to sign for Newcastle,” Pivas said in a statement.

“I see the young players have developed very well here and I would like to do the same – to develop and get into Newcastle’s first team. I’m very excited and I can’t wait to begin,” he added.

Believed about putting in some very good performances in a short space of time, says Bas de Leede

Believed about putting in some very good performances in a short space of time, says Bas de Leede

New Delhi, July 20 (IANS) After playing a part in the Netherlands winning the ICC Associate Member Men’s Performance of the Year award in the ICC Development Awards, Netherlands’ all-rounder Bas de Leede said the team had belief in itself about putting in some very good performance in a short period of time.

The Netherlands qualified for the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup in India by finishing runners-up in the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe. De Leede was one of their standout performers during the Qualifier in Zimbabwe, making 92-ball 123 after picking 5-52, as the Netherlands beat Scotland and overhaul their opponents’ net run-rate to clinch a place in India.

Before that, the Netherlands had beaten two-time ODI World Cup champions West Indies in the game of the tournament, with Logan van Beek hitting a record 30 runs in a Super Over. Later, in the main tournament, the Netherlands showed a good fight in India to beat South Africa and Bangladesh in the league stage.

“We knew what was needed going into it and the belief in the group was that we were capable of putting in some very good performances in a short space of time. There were some doubts maybe, but mostly belief was the big thing. We were trying to tell ourselves in the group that it was possible and then we were planning how we were going to do it.”

“That West Indies game is No.1. It was 375 to chase and not to get a single off the last ball but win off the Super Over like that, what Logan did that day was very special. After a game like that against the West Indies, it would be nice to be qualified already, but that wasn’t the case.”

“It was the same against Scotland, we knew what was needed. The net run-rate, batting second was handy. To put in a performance again, when it mattered, was special for us as a team. For myself, it was one of the better days on a cricket field,” said de Leede to ICC.

He went on to explain how important it was for the team to perform against full members in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup. “It was amazing to be at the World Cup. As associate nations, I think we represent each other on the big stage. To do that for the other associate nations was pretty cool.”

“We’ve always had a belief that we were good enough so to actually be there was a special moment. It was six or seven weeks of cricket against the best nations in the world and it is something that will probably only happen once in my life so I was very grateful for that opportunity.”
