Japan is hit by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake

The Japan Times reports that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale struck Fukushima and other prefectures in Japan’s east and northeast on Sunday at 12:24 p.m. local time.

According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, the quake struck at a depth of about 30 kilometers off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture.

While it registered a lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale to 7 in the city of Iwaki in Fukushima, it registered 4 and 3 in the neighboring prefectures of Miyagi, Yamagata, Ibaraki, and Niigata in the surrounding areas.

According to the Japan Times, a tsunami was not imminent, and no injuries or property damage had been reported as of yet.
