Kazakhstan’s Jeruto wins the 3,000-meter steeplechase

Norah Jeruto, who switched allegiances from Kenya earlier this year, put on a devastating display of front sprinting to win the global 3,000-meter steeplechase title on Wednesday in a huge championship record.

Jeruto beat Beatrice Chepkoech’s winning time from 2019 by more over five seconds and set a new record of eight minutes, 53.02 seconds.

Prior to fellow countryman Mekides Abebe, who worked extremely hard to rejoin the lead group and was rewarded with a personal best of 8:56.08, Werkuha Getachew established an Ethiopian record of 8:54.61 for second.

The fastest man in the world this year, Winfred Mutile Yavi of Bahrain, was in contention for a medal until he made a poor water jump on the last lap and completely lost his momentum, placing him fourth for the second straight World Championships.
