‘Misappropriation of funds’: Goa BJP chief says issue between party MLAs resolved

Panaji, Feb 5 (IANS) Goa BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Tanavade on Monday said the issue of “misappropriation of funds” raised by Assembly Speaker Ramesh has been resolved Tawadkar vs Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude.

“Before, I had said that it is a family matter. Later, some people criticized me about the issue. It is also not a happy or unhappy moment for me,” Tanavade said, after holding a meeting of Tawadkar and Gaude at the CM’s official residence.

He said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was also present during the meeting.

“Though they (Tawadkar and Gaude) hold key positions, both have been elected on party symbols. So being an MP is the first criteria, then come the different positions. Some become ministers, some become president. So to defuse this issue, I and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant held a meeting with them and resolved the issue,” he said.

When the Assembly session began on Monday morning, opposition MPs had raised the issue demanding a debate on the alleged corruption case. However, Speaker Tawadkar did not allow the discussion.

Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao had demanded a statement from the chief minister on the issue, but Sawant said the opposition should write to the appropriate forum.

Opposition parties had also criticized Tanavade for calling his own minister’s “misappropriation of funds” a “family matter” and demanded Gaude be sacked, holding him responsible for the alleged loot.

Last Friday, Tawadkar had filed complaints against Art and Culture Minister Gaude for alleged misappropriation of “special grants”.

Tawadkar, a senior BJP leader from the ST community, had said he would not tolerate the indiscipline of the minister “who was behaving without any protocol”.

“I am witnessing for the first time such an incident where a minister of my government is behaving irresponsibly and not following protocol. I feel sad about it. It should not happen. I will not tolerate it,” Tawadkar had said.
