Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, retained his seat in the Champawat assembly seat on Friday, defeating Congress’ Nirmala Gahtori by a record margin of over 55,000 votes.
Dhami hailed the people of the state for his victory shortly after the results were announced, calling it a triumph of their faith.
On May 31, a bypoll for the Champawat assembly seat was held, with almost 64% of the electorate voting.
According to election officials in Champawat, Dhami received 58,258 votes against Gahtori’s 3,233 votes, a record margin of 55,025 votes.
They said Gahtori had misplaced her deposit.

Despite the fact that Uttarakhand’s chief ministers who ran in by-elections have never lost, this is the largest margin by which a CM has won a by-election in the hill state.
Vijay Bahuguna, who had won a bypoll from Sitarganj on a Congress ticket by 40,000 votes in 2012, has had his record altered by Dhami.
Dhami had to run in the bypoll to become a member of the Assembly, which he needed to do to save his job as chief minister after losing to Khatima in the state elections in February.
Dhami had lost his seat in Khatima, which he had won in the 2012 and 2017 assembly elections, to Bhuvan Chandra Kapri of the Congress.
“This triumph is an order to devote myself entirely to the service of the state’s people.” In a statement, Dhami stated, “I also express my appreciation to our prime minister, whose consistent mentoring has made me worthy of the people’s affection and blessings.”
“The people’s trust has won,” Dhami stated.
He explained that the election in Champawat was not only about winning or losing.
“Behind it, there were also aspirations to establish a new Uttarakhand and write a golden chapter in the state’s growth history. “The victory, which came by a record margin of 55,025 votes, is a testament to the determination to realize those ambitions,” Dhami said.
