Two days after a local court stated it had no objections to the granting of the same, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi obtained a new regular passport on Sunday, sources said.
According to them, Gandhi received his passport in the afternoon despite the passport office’s assurances that it would be provided to him on Sunday.
He had applied for an ordinary passport after giving up the old diplomatic passport provided to him while he was a member of parliament, and is scheduled to depart for San Francisco in the United States on Monday evening where he would begin his three-city trip.
Following his conviction and two-year imprisonment by a Gujarat court in a defamation case involving his Modi surname statement, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as an MP.
Gandhi will begin his trip in San Francisco and connect with students at the esteemed Stanford University. He will next travel to Washington, DC, where he will meet with lawmakers and think tanks.
During his week-long visit to the USA, the head of the Congress is expected to connect with Indian Americans, meet legislators, think tank members, Wall Street CEOs, and university students.
