Ram Gopal Varma charged with cheating Rs 56 lakh

Police in Hyderabad have filed a cheating complaint against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma for allegedly defrauding a production firm owner after ‘borrowing’ Rs 56 lakh from him.

According to the police, a case was filed against Varma at Miyapur police station based on a court-referred complaint from the proprietor.

Varma allegedly borrowed the money from him in order to produce the Telugu film Disha in 2020, but then tricked him.

In 2019, the complainant met Varma through a mutual friend, according to the complaint.

He claims Varma received Rs 8 lakh from him in the first week of January 2020 for his film production.

Varma then sought Rs 20 lakh, which was supplied as a loan by check on January 22, 2020, with Varma promising to repay the cash within six months, according to the complainant.

Varma later requested additional Rs 28 lakh in the second week of February 2020, alleging financial constraints in his film production, according to the complainant.

“Believing his representation, Rs 28 lakh was given to Varma, and at that time he committed to refund the entire amount of Rs 56 lakh on or before the release of the film Disha,” according to the complaint.

However, in January 2021, the complainant claimed that he discovered Varma was not the producer of the film Disha and that he was duped out of the money by Varma’s bogus inducements.
