Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela, the Olympic champion in the triple jump, reaffirmed her status as the sport’s reigning queen on Monday by clearing 15.47 meters to earn her third consecutive World title.
With a best of 14.89m on her first attempt, Jamaican Shanieka Ricketts won her second consecutive global silver medal. On her final effort, she leaped from the sand and ran to the stands to embrace her fans.
The United States’ first medal in a women’s competition came from American Tori Franklin, who won bronze.
As the Venezuelan national song began to play at Hayward Field, Rojas, who broke her own world record in March with 15.74m and is the first woman to win the triple jump outdoor championship three times, grinned widely.
Rojas has set a goal of breaking the 16-meter barrier, but after rousing the crowd for her last effort on Monday, she fell far short.
