The golden darling of British sport, Emma Raducanu, was defeated 6-3, 6-3 by France’s Caroline Garcia on Centre Court in the second round on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old, who shot to popularity with her mesmerizing US Open victory the previous year, did not play poorly, but Garcia’s superior firepower was too much for her to handle.
Garcia, a former top-10 player, controlled the first set by hitting hard and upsetting Raducanu, the 10th seed.
In the second set, she kept on burning while Raducanu faded despite having a lot of help.
Garcia won the next game with a backhand pass, her 25th winner of the match, breaking serve at 3-3 and holding for a 5-3 advantage.
