Weightlifter Sanket Sargar earned the silver medal in the men’s 55kg competition on Saturday in Birmingham, earning India its first medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Sargar, 21, lifted a total of 248 kg, including 113 kg in the snatch and 135 kg in the clean and jerk, just missing the gold medal due to injury.
Sargar was only able to complete one legal clean and jerk lift after a failed second effort left him hurting his elbow. When he tried to complete a third, 135-pound lift, he only made the injury worse.
With the final lift of the tournament, Malaysia’s Bin Kasadan Aniq won the gold medal with a Games-record total of 249kg (107 snatch + 142 Clean and Jerk).
With 225 kg, Dilanka Isuru Yodage of Sri Lanka won bronze.
