With a determined effort to defeat Russian Anna Blinkova and go to the fourth round of the Roland Garros, Elina Svitolina, a former quarterfinalist at the French Open, advanced.
After giving birth to her baby Skai with her husband and fellow tennis player Gael Monfils in April, Svitolina made her WTA Tour comeback at the Charleston Open.
She won her first victory in two years by defeating Blinkova in last week’s Strasbourg final.
The former world number three was staring at defeat after losing the first set tamely but hit back to square the match and broke early in the final.
She was competing in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time since the 2022 Australian Open.
Despite being down 1-3, Blinkova fought back to tie Svitolina at 5-5 until the Ukrainian secured the victory with a superb backhand pass. Blinkova had upset fifth seed Caroline Garcia in the previous round.
