Officials in Srinagar claimed a police policeman was killed and his seven-year-old daughter was injured when militants opened fire indiscriminately outside their home in Soura, on the outskirts of the city.
They said Constable Saifullah Qadri, the third police officer slain in Kashmir this month, was leaving home to drop his daughter off at school when the incident occurred.
On May 7, militants killed a police officer near the Anchar area at Aiwa bridge, and on May 13, another police officer was killed in Pulwama district.
“Terrorists opened fire outside constable Qadri’s residence in Ganaie Mohalla in Srinagar district’s Anchar region,” an official added.
“Qadri and his daughter were taken to the adjacent SKIMS hospital, where he died of his injuries,” the spokesman continued.
The toddler was shot in the right hand but is no longer in danger. Vijay Kumar, the inspector general of police (Kashmir range), expressed sorrow over the tragedy and said police teams have been dispatched to nearby locations to apprehend the perpetrators.
“They’ll be here shortly,” he said.
