Kolkata, Feb 5 (IANS) In a significant move, the Congress on Monday gave West Bengal party president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury full authority over finalizing candidates and charting the campaign strategy for the state to in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress central leadership announced the formation of the 28-member West Bengal Congress Election Committee, with Chowdhury as its chairman.
Political observers consider this development to be significant in two respects.
The first is that the Congress high command has also exhausted its last hope of an amicable seat-sharing deal with the Trinamool Congress and has thus given Chowdhury full authority in the matter.
Second, accountability to Chowdhury will speed up the process of finalizing seat-sharing talks with the CPI-M-led Left Front, which he is already interested in.
Observers also said that apart from Chowdhury, the majority of the 28-member election committee is from those who are strongly against any kind of alliance with Trinamool in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
“The constitution of the committee is a clear endorsement by the Congress high command of the views of Chowdhury and his supporters that for the party, the BJP and the Trinamool Congress are equal enemies in West Bengal’s perspective,” he said. a political observer of the city.
