An 18-year-old gunman in body armor slaughtered at least 21 people, including 19 children and two adults, at a Texas elementary school, prompting an anguished President Joe Biden to urge Congress to “transform this pain into action” to rein in the powerful gun lobby.
As a nation we must ask: When in God’s name will we stand up to the gun lobby?— President Biden (@POTUS) May 25, 2022
When in God’s name will we do what needs to be done?
I’m sick and tired of it. We have to act.
Officials said the teen opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, some 134 kilometers from San Antonio, at about 11.30 a.m. on Tuesday before being slain by law officers.
The suspect was armed with a handgun, an AR-15 semi-automatic weapon, and high-capacity magazines, according to investigators.
Salvador Ramos, a resident of the region where the school was located, was named as the killer by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The motivation of the shooter is unknown.
According to US media reports, the boy is suspected of shooting his grandma to start the spree.
“He shot and killed fourteen pupils and a teacher in a horrendous, incomprehensible manner,” Abbott added.
The death toll was then risen to 19 youngsters and two adults.
Two police officers were shot, but Abbott said they are likely to recover. The deceased’s names and other details have yet to be revealed. According to the school’s website, its students range in age from 5 to 11.
