Venus Williams, a multiple Grand Slam champion, made a surprise and successful return to the court on Friday to compete at Wimbledon.
She was drawn to the sight of the All England Club’s immaculate grounds.
Due to a wildcard entry, the 42-year-old American returned to the court with Jamie Murray in the mixed doubles and quickly secured a place in the second round. She was motivated by seeing her younger sister Serena earlier in the week.
Venus said she was ecstatic to play at Wimbledon
“I had no game strategy. I became ecstatic when I saw the grass “Williams stated after defeating Alicja Rosolska and Michael Venus 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-3 with her British partner.
“Although the French Open is a wonderful event, when I was there, my heart didn’t beat the same way. Not because I could play, but I didn’t have any plans. That is the reason I asked (Murray) at the last minute.”
Williams never won Mixed Doubles in Wimbledon
Williams has never won the Wimbledon mixed doubles competition; Murray has won it twice. This is despite her illustrious career.
Williams has won all four major slam doubles championships, including six at Wimbledon, the mixed doubles at the Australian and French Opens, in addition to her seven singles grand slam victories.
I generally give this one a bit more emphasis because it’s one of the few that I haven’t won, she said.
