World U20 Athletics: Triple jumper Thirumaran wins silver

On Friday, Indian triple jumper Selva P Thirumaran won the silver medal in the World Under-20 Athletics Championship in Cali, Colombia, surpassing his previous best.

The 17-year-old finished two centimeters ahead of Viktor Morozov of Estonia after clearing a distance of 16.15 meters.

Jaydon Hibbert of Jamaica won the gold after setting a new championship record with a jump of 17.27 meters.

The leap that earned Thirumaran the silver medal was his second attempt.

The Indian women’s squad, meanwhile, earned a spot in the 4x400m relay championship.

Summy, Priya Habbathanahalli Mohan, Rajitha Kunja, and Rupal together timed 3:34.18 seconds to place second in Heat 3 and fourth overall.

Neeraj Chopra, an Olympic champion in the javelin throw, became the first Indian to take home a gold medal from the competition in 2016.

Three medals, including two silver and a bronze, have been won by Indian athletes at the current competition, formerly known as the World Junior Championships.

India won three medals at the most recent competition in Nairobi in 2021: two silver and one bronze.
