2024 LS polls not only to form govt, but also to protect democracy and Constitution, says CPI-M leader

Published

on

Agartala, April 9 (IANS) CPI-M’s Tripura Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Tuesday said that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are not only about forming a government but also protecting the nation, its democracy and the Constitution.

Addressing an election rally at Baikhora in southern Tripura, Chaudhury, who is also the co-convener of the INDIA bloc in Tripura, accused the ruling BJP of trying to impose dictatorship curbing the independent views, thinking, and actions.

“Over 140 crore people of India are now in grave danger due to the autocratic governance of the BJP. To protect the nation and its people, 27 political parties, despite differences, formed the INDIA bloc to vote out the BJP,” he said.

For the first time in the 72-year electoral history of Tripura, the Left and the Congress are contesting together in the parliamentary polls to take on the BJP, though the two traditional rivals jointly fought against the ruling party in last year’s Assembly elections.

The Left leader said there were differences between the Left parties and the Congress but an alliance was formed between them to protect the country, its democracy, and its Constitution.

“Some unelected people backed by the ruling party leaders are controlling everything in Tripura, be it government services, beneficiary selection for government schemes, trade and business, or normal activities of life. If anyone raises any issues against any BJP leaders, he or she would either be attacked or arrested by the law enforcing agencies,” Chaudhury alleged.

Criticising the BJP’s “Achhe Din” and “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas” slogans, he said that a small section of people close to the ruling party are getting all benefits and privileges. The BJP came to power due to the division of non-BJP and opposition votes, Choudhury said, adding that less than one-third of people supported the BJP.

He alleged that the BJP is killing the democratic system of India and that people would cast their votes against such misdeeds.

Of Tripura’s two Lok Sabha seats, Tripura West goes to polls on April 19 and Tripura East on April 26. Congress’s state President Asish Kumar Saha is contesting, as the INDIA bloc candidate, in the Tripura West Lok Sabha seat against BJP nominee and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb while former CPI-M MLA Rajendra Reang is the bloc nominee in the Tripura East constituency, reserved for the tribals, against the BJP’s Kriti Devi Debbarma.

TN SIT takes three into custody in Kerala kidney racket case

Published

By

Chennai, May 28 (IANS) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Tamil Nadu Police has taken three persons into custody from different parts of the state in connection with a kidney racket based out of Kerala with international connections.

Those taken into custody were allegedly involved in connecting kidney donors with recipients, police sources said.

On May 19, Kerala Police arrested a person named Sabith Nasar (30) after he returned from Iran following inputs from central intelligence agencies, which were monitoring his whereabouts for the past couple of months.

While Nasar admitted to being involved in the illegal sale of kidneys of around 20 people in Iran, the police suspect the involvement of more people in this case.

During questioning, the accused disclosed the involvement of another person named Sajith Shyam, a resident of Kochi, who Nasar claimed was the person behind the money transactions in the kidney racket.

Nasar and Shyam, who was arrested later, revealed the presence of many agents in various parts of the country, including in several north Indian states.

Phone tapping: BJP demands KCR’s arrest after ex-cop’s revelation

Published

on

By

Hyderabad, May 28 (IANS) With a former police officer’s arrest in the phone tapping case making startling revelations, the BJP’s Telangana unit on Tuesday demanded former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s arrest and prosecution.

BJP Spokesman N. V. Subhash asked why the Congress government is not arresting the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader despite the evidence of his involvement in phone tapping.

Describing phone tapping as the biggest scam of the BRS, he alleged that the KCR family and police officers close to them were involved.

He said that the lack of action by the Congress government in the case shows that BRS and Congress have colluded.

The BJP leader said the confessions of the police officers show that the BRS government harassed several BJP leaders. He said a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) can bring out the truth.

BJP General Secretary Bandi Sanjay Kumar called KCR’s actions a “disgrace” to democracy.

“Phone tapping done under the BRS regime is worse than the emergency. This is a violation of Constitutional and human rights,” he said, adding that KCR’s fear of the BJP is now out in the open.

He was reacting to the reported confession of former Deputy Commissioner of Police Radha Kishan Rao, an accused in the case.

The former DCP revealed details of how the Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) was used by the previous BRS government headed by KCR to tap the phones of leaders of opposition parties, businesspersons and even the dissidents within BRS.

Sanjay said Radha Kishan Rao’s confession has confirmed his previous statements on the involvement of KCR.

“It is evident now that KCR wanted to fabricate the MLA poaching case as a quid pro quo to protect his own daughter, caught in the liquor scam. Such a shame that KCR and his gang have not even spared private conversations between couples. As someone who took an oath on the Constitution, KCR has not only betrayed the law but also has crushed the basic rights of citizens,” he said.

The BJP leader said that the BRS Chief is unfit to hold any constitutional position, including that of an MLA and needs to be banned from contesting elections.

Along with KCR, all those involved in phone-tapping from the BRS party need to be prosecuted and removed as public representatives from their posts. It is imperative to also think about banning BRS membership.

“Despite the clear evidence, why isn’t the Congress government arresting KCR? Why hasn’t the main accused, Prabhakar Rao, been brought back from the USA?” he asked.

Sanjay said former SIB Chief Prabhakar Rao’s arrest could reveal more facts about the corrupt practices of the BRS government.

The BJP leader stated that if Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has faith in democracy, he should write to the CBI, seeking a detailed investigation.

He also demanded that the Assembly Speaker disqualify KCR as the MLA.
