Chinese ships 'harass' Philippine supply ships with water cannons

Published

on

Manila, April 30 (IANS/DPA) Chinese coastguard ships on Tuesday fired water cannons at Filipino vessels bringing supplies to fishermen in waters near a disputed South China Sea shoal that is within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, the Philippine Coastguard said.

A Philippine coastguard ship and a vessel from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) were carrying out “a legitimate maritime patrol in the waters near Bajo De Masinloc,” the local name of Scarborough Shoal, “to distribute fuel and food supplies” for fishermen.

“During the patrol, the Philippine vessels encountered dangerous manoeuvres and obstruction from four China coastguard vessels and six Chinese maritime militia vessels,” the coastguard said in a statement.

A Chinese vessel used its water cannon, “directly hitting the starboard astern of the BFAR vessel,” it added. The Chinese also targeted the Philippine coastguard vessel from both sides, “resulting in damage to the railing and canopy.”

“This damage serves as evidence of the forceful water pressure used by the China coastguard in their harassment of the Philippine vessels,” the Philippine coastguard said.

Scarborough Shoal, also known to the Chinese as Huangyan Dao or Democracy Reef, is 230 kilometres from the Philippines’ north-western coast. It is claimed by both China and the Philippines.

The shoal was the focus of a military incident between the two countries in 2012, after which Beijing summarily occupied the reef. Although a court ruled in 2016 that China’s historical claims to the area were invalid, Beijing does not recognise the ruling.

OpenAI removes AI voice that sounds similar to actress Scarlett Johansson

Published

By

New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) OpenAI has announced to pause one of the voices used by its AI chatbot called ChatGPT that sounds similar to Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson.

In a blog post, the Sam Altman-run AI company said that Sky voice is now being paused after the company used it during the launch of its new GPT-4o model last week.

“We believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity’s distinctive voice — Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice,” OpenAI said.

“To protect their privacy, we cannot share the names of our voice talents,” it added.

Johansson also released a statement, saying OpenAI approached her in September about supplying the voice.

“Last September, I received an offer from Sam Altman, who wanted to hire me to voice the current ChatGPT 4.0 system,” Johansson posted on X.

She, however, declined “after much consideration and for personal reasons” and was “shocked” when she heard the released demo.

Altman replied that the voice of Sky is not Johansson’s, and it was never intended to resemble hers.

In September 2023, OpenAI introduced voice capabilities to give users another way to interact with ChatGPT.

“Since then, we are encouraged by the way users have responded to the feature and the individual voices. Each of the voices — Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper and Sky — are sampled from voice actors we partnered with to create them,” said the company.

OpenAI’s demonstration last week showcased AI’s enhanced conversational abilities.

Tel Aviv, May 21 (IANS) Three former US foreign policy officials in Donald Trump’s administration are in Israel and have met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the opposition leader, Yair Lapid.

The three aides are Robert O’Brien, who was Trump’s National Security Advisor (NSA), John Rakolta, former Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, and Ed McMullen, former Ambassador to Switzerland.

John Rakolta as the US Ambassador to the UAE was instrumental in normalizing the relationship of Israel with UAE and Bahrain and played a key role in signing the Abraham Accords.

The three are considered to be the close policy advisors of Donald Trump.

Sources in the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the visit of the three high-ranking former US officials, who are Trump’s close aides.

According to sources, the senior policy advisors have discussed with Netanyahu and Lapid the situation in Israel, the war with Hamas and the policy stand taken by the current US President Joe Biden.

It was during the period of Donald Trump as the US President between 2017 and 2021 that the capital of Israel was shifted from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem — a long demand by the Israelis.

With Donald Trump being the Republican candidate for the US presidential post, he is trying to pitch himself as a much more reliable ally to Israel than Biden.

Sources in Israel’s Prime Minister’s office said that the three policy advisors of Trump have communicated to the Israeli leadership the wholehearted support of the Republican presidential candidate for the Israeli cause.
