Govt collects Rs 600 crore as penalties for taxpayers’ delay in PAN-Aadhar linking

New Delhi, Feb 5 (IANS) The government has collected over Rs 600 crore as penalties from people who failed to meet the deadline to link their PAN with their Aadhaar card, he said in Parliament on Monday.

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told the Lok Sabha in a written reply that the number of PANs not linked with Aadhaar, excluding the exempted categories, is 11.48 crore as on January 29 of 2024.

The deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar was June 30, 2023.

The Income Tax Department had stated in its order that PAN cards will become inoperable if taxpayers do not link their documents with Aadhaar within the deadline. Further, no refund will be made for such PANs. Not linking PAN with biometric document would also attract higher TDS and TCS.

The PAN can be re-operated by paying a fine after paying a fine of Rs 1000.
