Modi govt never waived farm loans, Priyanka Gandhi claims in Haryana

Published

on

Panipat, May 23 (IANS) Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra claimed on Thursday that the BJP-led Central government never waived the loans of the farmers who were forced to commit suicide due to debt, whereas loans worth Rs 16 lakh crore of 22 billionaires were waived by the same dispensation.

“The Modi government imposed GST (Goods and Services Tax) on farmers and refused to give MSP (Minimum Support Price) to them,” she said at a public meeting in Panipat, Haryana.

Accompanying senior party leaders, including two-time Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda, Haryana Congress President Chaudhary Udaibhan, and Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Hooda, Priyanka said the farmers and farm labourers feed the country by toiling the fields, but the BJP repeatedly uses ‘lathis’, tear gas and bullets on them.

“The farmers waited on the borders of Delhi for more than a year. The entire country was with the farmers, and even Congress MP Deepender Hooda sat with the farmers during the movement. But instead of showing sympathy towards our ‘annadatas’ (farmers), the BJP insulted them by calling them traitors.”

She also said that a UP minister’s son crushed four farmers to death, but to date, the government has not given justice to the victims.

“When we went to Lakhimpur Kheri to meet the victims’ families, we were stopped on the way and arrested. This reveals the anti-farmer, anti-worker and anti-poor mentality of the BJP,” she stated.

“Today, unemployment in the country has broken the record of 45 years. If the Congress comes to power, we will provide permanent jobs in 30 lakh posts at the Centre. The Agnipath scheme will be discontinued. Farmers will be given the benefits of MSP and loan waiver. Also, women will be given financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh annually,” she promised.

Addressing the rally, Bhupinder Hooda claimed the Congress will win both the Assembly and Lok Sabha seats in Karnal.

“The enthusiasm of the people makes it certain that the BJP will be wiped out from Haryana, and an INDIA bloc coalition government will be formed at the Centre,” he said.

Besides Rupauli, Bihar to have bypolls in four more Assembly constituencies

Published

on

By

Patna, June 16 (IANS) Besides Rupauli, bypolls will also be held in Ramgarh, Belaganj, Tarari, and Imamganj assembly seats of Bihar to fill vacancies that have arisen after the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

The Rupauli seat was vacated by Bima Bharti, who resigned as JD(U) MLA and joined the RJD to contest the Lok Sabha poll from Purnea. Voting for the Rupauli bypoll is slated for July 10.

Of the remaining four constituencies where bypolls will be conducted, the Mahagathbandhan had won three — Ramgarh (RJD), Belaganj (RJD), and Tarari (CPI-ML) — in the 2020 Assembly elections.

RJD’s Ramgarh MLA Sudhakar Singh has won the Lok Sabha election from Buxar, RJD MLA from Belaganj Surendra Yadav won in Jahanabad, and CPI-ML’s Tarari MLA Sudama Prasad has won from Arrah Lok Sabha seat.

Hindustani Awam Morcha-Secular (HAM-S) chief and Imamganj MLA Jitan Ram Manjhi has won the Gaya Lok Sabha seat.

It is likely the RJD will field Sudhkar Singh’s younger brother Ajit Singh from Ramgarh. Ajit Singh was formerly in the JD(U). In the Yadav-dominated Belaganj assembly seat, Surendra Yadav’s son Vishwanath Yadav is preparing to contest by poll on the RJD ticket.

Mahagathbandhan sources have hinted that like in 2020, the Tarari assembly seat will be again contested by a CPI-ML candidate.

For Imamganj, it is being said that Jitan Ram Manjhi’s younger son Praveen Manjhi is staking claim.

RJD spokesperson Mritunjay Tiwari has said that the Mahagathbandhan will win all five assembly seats in the bypolls.

“RJD is always ready for elections. Four members of the Bihar Legislative Assembly have won the Lok Sabha elections this time, out of which three are from the INDIA bloc,” he said.

BJP spokesperson Arvind Kumar Singh has said that no one can claim a stronghold on any seat. “In a democracy, the people have the power and they are with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar because of their development works. The NDA will win all five seats of the bypolls and there is no doubt about it,” he added.

Bengal bypolls: Congress to contest Raiganj and Bagda; back CPI-M in other 2 seats

Published

on

By

Kolkata, June 16 (IANS) The West Bengal Congress announced on Saturday that it will contest two out of the four bypolls scheduled in West Bengal on July 10, and support the CPI(M) candidates in the remaining two seats.

A senior state Congress leader said that the party has decided to field candidates in Raiganj in North Dinajpur district, and Bagda in North 24 Parganas district, while the CPI-M will contest the bypolls at Ranaghat Dakshin in Nadia district and Maniktala in Kolkata.

Incidentally, on Friday night, the Left Front issued a statement announcing the names of the CPI-M candidates for Ranaghat Dakshin and Maniktala, and a nominee from the front ally All India Forward Bloc for Bagda.

Now, the Congress’ decision to field its candidate from Bagda will mean that the Congress-Left Front alliance will not be taking shape in Bagda.

“While the other allies in the Left Front have always been open about seat-sharing talks with us, Forward Bloc is the only ally that has gone against it. In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, Forward Bloc fielded its candidate against the Congress in Cooch Behar. So this time we have decided to field our candidate from Bagda as well,” the state Congress leader said.

Tribal welfare board scam: K'taka BJP gives call for state-wide protest on June 28

Published

By

Bengaluru, June 16 (IANS) Demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in connection with Rs 187 crore tribal welfare board scam and the suicide of a board employee, the Karnataka unit of the BJP has announced that the party would stage a large-scale state-wide protest on June 28.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday at BJP headquarters in Bengaluru, former minister B. Sriramulu stated the party has decided to take up a large-scale protest in this regard in the coming days.

He said in a meeting headed by state unit BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra, it was decided to stage protests in all districts and taluk headquarters on June 28.

Sriramulu questioned: “How is it possible to transfer such a huge amount without the knowledge of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah?”

“There is suspicion about the role of Siddaramaiah in the scam. An innocent official of the board had committed suicide. He left behind a note on the misuse of Rs 187 crore,” he said.

The BJP leader claimed that the Congress government has misused Rs 25,000 crore reserved for Dalits in the last two years by diverting the funds meant to be spent on Dalits.

Bangaru Hanumanthu, president of state unit BJP S-T Morcha, said: “The Morcha will convene preliminary meetings on June 18. On June 28, we will lay siege to district commissioner’s offices all across the state. B.Y. Vijayendra has directed to carry out large scale protests. The agitation will continue until the resignation of the Chief Minister.”

The scam in the corporation came to light following the suicide of Chandrashekaran (50), who was working as an Account Superintendent in the Tribal Welfare Board.

He was allegedly pressurised to move large sums of money to various illegal accounts.

It was alleged that the funds were diverted to Hyderabad to be used by Congress for the Lok Sabha election in Telangana and other states.
