Cops stabbed, beaten up while attempting raid operations in Bengal's Chopra

Cops stabbed, beaten up while attempting raid operations in Bengal's Chopra

Kolkata, July 25 (IANS) At least four policemen were severely injured after they were stabbed with sharp-edged weapons and beaten up at Chopra in the North Dinajpur district of West Bengal on Thursday.

The cops had gone there to conduct a raid in search of a local miscreant, Dil Mohammad.

Incidentally, Chopra came into the national limelight recently after a video went viral where a local Trinamool Congress leader and strongman Tajimul Islam alias ‘JCB’ was seen mercilessly beating up a local woman in public at a Kangaroo court.

District police sources said Mohammad, who is known in the locality as a private money-lender, has been accused of kidnapping a local youth who was not returning the money.

As per the initial report, as the police team reached the residence of the accused, suddenly they were surrounded and attacked by his associates carrying sharp weapons. The attackers included a couple of women. In the attack, two junior police officers, one constable and the driver of the police vehicle were injured severely.

Later a second police team reached there and rescued them. The four injured cops are currently under treatment at a private hospital in Siliguri. Till the time the report was filed, there was no information of any arrest in this connection.

On July 15, a team from the West Bengal Police were attacked and fired upon while they attempted to arrest an imposter accused of selling fake gold at Kultali in South 24 Parganas district.

West Bengal has been in the news for quite some time for attacks on the investigating officials by the aggressive local crowds. In January, a team of Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and accompanying Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were attacked by the local people while they attempted a raid and search operation at the residence of local strongman and Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district.

Again in April this year, a team of National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials were attacked after they reached Bhapatinagar in East Midnapore district to investigate the explosion there in December 2022 which had killed three persons.

CM Mamata Banerjee cancels Delhi visit today, suspense on NITI Aayog meet participation

Kolkata, July 25 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has cancelled her trip to Delhi on Thursday afternoon. However, it is not yet clear whether her three-day trip to the national capital has been cancelled totally or she has postponed her travel by a day.

State secretariat sources said that the Chief Minister might go to Delhi on Friday and attend the NITI Aayog event on Saturday, besides her scheduled meeting with the party Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members.

“However, there is nothing final about that as yet,” said a member of the state cabinet who refused to be named. However, he declined to make any comment on the reasons that prompted the Chief Minister to cancel her trip on Thursday.

Now it is to be seen whether the Chief Minister makes any statement later in the day or announces her changed programme.

The development has created ripples in the corridors of power in the state since the three-day trip was considered extremely crucial after the information surfaced that the Chief Minister’s Office had sought time from the Prime Minister’s Office so that she could have an exclusive meeting with PM Narendra Modi during her visit to the national capital.

It was expected that in the probable meeting, the Chief Minister would discuss with the Prime Minister the pending Central dues to the state government under various centrally-sponsored schemes.

Woman MLA who faced CM Nitish's ire in Assembly speaks up

New Delhi, July 25 (IANS) Rekha Devi, RJD MLA from Bihar, has criticised Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for treating a woman legislator with disrespect in the Vidhan Sabha.

“All the coalition MLAs were protesting on the reservation issue, demanding an explanation for its removal from the 9th Schedule and the CM responded with anger. We did not expect such a reaction, especially towards a woman”, said Rekha Devi.

“Nitish Kumar is frustrated because his demand for special status for Bihar was denied. This along with his old age might explain his outburst”, she added.

Referencing Bhim Rao Ambedkar she said, “It is the outcome of his work that we received reservation, which is why we became MLAs. We were brought here by Lalu Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav, not Nitish Kumar.”

She further criticised Nitish Kumar for insulting women in the Assembly and said that he talks about respecting women but it does not reflect in his behaviour.

On Wednesday Nitish Kumar lost his cool in the Assembly while speaking on the reservation issue and shouted at RJD MLA Rekha Devi saying “these people (RJD) never let women progress. You are a woman…you don’t know anything.”

NTR, Chandranna back as TDP-led Andhra govt goes on name changing spree

NTR, Chandranna back as TDP-led Andhra govt goes on name changing spree

Amaravati, July 25 (IANS) From NTR Health University to YSR Health University to now back to NTR Health University. The name changing game is never ending in Andhra Pradesh.

The change of guard has led to a spree of change of names of government schemes.

NTR and Chandraanna have replaced YSR and Jagananna with the names of popular welfare schemes.

The NDA government has now renamed Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences (YSRUHS) located in Vijayawada city as NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS).

Dr YSR University of Health Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2024 was passed in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday to change the name.

Minister for Health, Family Welfare and Medical Education, Y Satya Kumar moved the Bill and it was supported by MLAs of the TDP and its allies Jana Sena and the BJP.

The Bill was passed in the absence of the MLAs of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) whose government had replaced NTR with YSR in 2022.

Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who was popularly known as YSR, was the chief minister of united Andhra Pradesh between 2004 and 2009. He was the father of YSRCP founder YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who lost power recently to the TDP-JSP-BJP alliance.

After TDP lost power in 2019, Jagan Mohan Reddy had renamed the schemes implemented by the previous government.

The new schemes launched by the YSRCP government were also named after either YSR or Jagan.

Satya Kumar mentioned that it was NT Rama Rao who founded NTRUHS, but unfortunately ‘NTR’ was removed from the name of the university.

This reflected the narrow mindset of former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, he said.

On June 4 when the counting of votes was on and the trends showed a massive lead for the coalition, TDP workers had replaced the name board of Dr. YSRUHS with one having Dr. NTRUHS’ written on it.

The mob had also damaged a plaque on the base of YSR’s statue on the campus.

Health university was the brainchild of former Chief Minister and TDP founder late NT Rama Rao.

NTR, as the late leader was popularly known, had inaugurated the university in 1986. After the death of NTR in 1995, then Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had named the university after the legendary actor-turned politician.

However, the YSRCP government in 2022 changed the name of the university to Dr. YSRUHS after late Chief Minister YSR.

The Assembly had passed a Bill in September 2022 renaming the university after YSR amid protests by TDP members.

After assuming office as the chief minister last month, Chandrababu Naidu had signed five files and this included one to enhance social security pension while restoring the name of the scheme as NTR Bharosa.

NTR Bharosa was changed to YSR Pension Kanuka after YSRCP came to power in 2019.

Naidu also signed another file to re-open Anna Canteens, which were shut by the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government.

As NTR, who was father-in-law of Naidu, was affectionately called ‘Anna’ (elder brother), the earlier TDP government had used the name for canteens, which were set up to provide meals at Rs 5 to the poor and the middle class.

All 204 canteens were shut in August 2019 as YSR Congress alleged corruption in the scheme.

The TDP had alleged that the Jagan government shut down the canteens due to political vendetta. At a few places, the YSRCP re-opened the canteens after re-naming them as ‘Rajanna’, as the late YSR was fondly called.

The new government has also changed the names of other schemes which had YSR or Jagan as prefixes.

Jagananna Vidya Deevena has become Post Matric Scholarship. Jagananna Vasathi Deevena is renamed Post Matric Scholarships. Jagananna Videshi Vidya Deevena will now be called Ambedkar Overseas Vidya Nidhi (scholarships for overseas education).

Jagananna Civil Services Protasahakam is renamed Incentives for Civil Services Exams scheme. YSR Kalyana Masthu has become Chandranna Pelli Kanuka (financial help for marriage of poor girls) while YSR Vidyonnathi has become NTR Vidyonnathi (financial help for poor students to continue education).

DISHA mobile application is now called women safety app while Nadu-Nedu has become School Infrastructure Improvement programme.

Similarly, the coalition government also restored the names of schemes implemented between 2014 and 2019.

After coming to power in 2019, YSRCP had renamed Annadata Sukhibhava Scheme as Rythu Bharosa, NTR Housing as YSR Gruhanirmana Padakam and Anna Amrutha Hastam as YSR Amrutha Hastam.

Act East: Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurates India's 500th community radio station in Aizawl

New Delhi, July 25 (IANS) In another milestone in the government’s policy of Act East, Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday inaugurated India’s 500th community radio station at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) in Aizawl, Mizoram.

Apart from launching ‘Apna Radio 90.0 FM’, in the presence of Union Minister of State for I&B, L. Murugan and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, the Minister also announced the winners of 10th National Community Radio Awards.

“This milestone in India’s community radio journey will bring a substantive change in the lives of people in the coverage area of Apna Radio station,” said Minister Vaishnaw, who also holds the Railways portfolio.

The minister also informed that the Budget-2024 has made a record allocation under the railways budget for the Northeast region.

He said this will bolster Mizoram’s long-cherished dream of getting good railway connectivity.

The Chief Minister said Apna Radio Station at IIMC Aizawl will write a new chapter in communication for the state.

“Mizoram is primarily an agrarian state due to its significant agriculture potential. Establishing a community radio station for the farmer community would be highly beneficial, providing them with daily weather updates, government schemes and agriculture-related information,” said Lalduhoma.

According to MoS Murugan, as against the commercial nature of private radio channels, community radio stations are set up out of a commitment to last-mile information communication.

He further added that the role of these stations rises significantly during times of natural disaster.

The ‘National Community Radio Awards’ are generally conferred every year.
