Warsaw (Poland), Feb 5 (IANS) Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed that Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski will leave the club in July. Zielinski, whose contract expires in June 2024, was in talks with Napoli over a new deal, but the two sides failed to reach an agreement.
Inter Milan officially informed the Italian Serie A champions that they had made contact with Zielinski. The 29-year-old is expected to join the Nerazzurri on a free transfer.
De Laurentiis revealed that the midfielder will leave Napoli at the end of the season. Coach Walter Mazzarri has already excluded the Pole from the UEFA Champions League squad ahead of their round of 16 clash against FC Barcelona, reports Xinhua.
“UEFA offers fewer places for players compared to the national league. Looking ahead to next season, I have to decide who we will give opportunities to,” De Laurentiis told Italian media on Monday. On Sunday evening, Inter Milan chief executive Giuseppe Marotta explained why the club decided to offer Zielinski a contract. “Since Inter will have even more games to play next season with the FIFA Club World Cup, we are looking for a more competitive squad. We have an obligation to go after transfer possibilities like Zielinski,” he said .
Inter are at the top of the Serie A standings, four points clear of second-placed Juventus, despite having played a game less.
