Poaching benefits BJP, Jairam Ramesh criticises TMC

Bayron Biswas Congress MLA joins TMC

The Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led party on Tuesday, a day after its lone MLA in West Bengal joined the TMC, claiming that such “poaching” is not intended to promote Opposition unity and simply helps the BJP’s goals.

Bayron Biswas, the only MLA for the Congress in the state assembly, defected to the TMC on Monday, doing so in the presence of the party’s general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

In a scathing attack on the TMC, Congress national secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed, “Bayron Biswas has been enticed away by the TMC in West Bengal three months after he was elected as a Congress MLA in a historic triumph.

Ramesh wrote on Twitter, “This is a complete betrayal of the mandate of the people of the Sagardighi Assembly constituency.”

According to him, the BJP’s goals are served solely by the poaching that has previously taken place in Goa, Meghalaya, Tripura, and other states.

The decision of the Congress’ MLA to join the TMC and Ramesh’s criticism of the Mamata Banrjee-led party come at a time when efforts are being made to bring the Opposition together to defeat the BJP in the general election of 2024.
